Vestibular (Vertigo) Physiotherapy
Vertigo is a sensation described by most as the feeling of spinning on the spot, or the room spinning around them. The best example of the feeling of vertigo would be the feeling you used to get as a child following a “dizzy wizzy”. Vertigo can be caused by many things however it must be differentiated from other forms of dizziness which may be the result of blood pressure issues, stress, medication changes or other neurological conditions.
Once it is determined that it is true vertigo there are a number of causes of this symptom including; Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), Labrinthitis, Neuronitis or Menier’s disease. The treatment of this condition varies according to the underlying cause. The most immediately amenable condition to Physiotherapy is BPPV which is caused by a floating calcification in the vestibular system (inner ear). This condition is easily assessed and often quick to resolve with the correct physiotherapy manoeuvre known as the Epley’s Manoeuvre. Other forms of vertigo will certainly require medical attention but in the event it is deemed the vertigo is persistent there are habituation and balance exercises that can be prescribed by a well trained physiotherapist. Brighton Beach Physiotherapy has physiotherapists trained in how to assist you with your vestibular issues.
