Whilst the pain may initially present only with certain activities, like the ones mentioned above, it can progressively worsen to the point where the knee is constantly painful.
Treatment– Most people suffering from Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome will respond very well to Physiotherapy treatment alone. Your Physiotherapist will start by taking a clear history of your concerns, perform a physical assessment to ascertain that Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome is the most appropriate diagnosis. Further assessment will determine the major contributing factors to your case, whether that be primarily concerns at the foot, the knee or the hip, often there will be a combination of all three. Treatment may include a selection of the following;
- Soft tissue massage
- Patella (kneecap) mobilisation
- Dry needling
- Taping techniques or brace fitting
- Orthotic prescription
- Home strengthening regime for muscles at the hip, knee and potentially foot.
- Running technique correction
Whilst Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome is a common condition, it is often mismanaged. In the vast majority of cases there is a simple solution to this painful knee condition.
